bloomfield crimeOfficer Ralph Marotti of the Bloomfield Police Department reports on the arrest of Wando Delmaro, 58, and Michaelangelo Costello, 31, both of Jersey City, NJ. The arrests were in response to a series of “water department diversionary” burglaries that occurred in the Township of Bloomfield. The suspects were charged with Burglary, Theft and Conspiracy.

Bloomfield Detectives conducting the investigations were able to verify a license plate identifying the vehicle used during the crimes. On Friday February 17th Bloomfield Detectives located the vehicle in Jersey City and after hours of surveillance both suspects were arrested. A knife was discovered during the arrest, which was later identified from a diversionary burglary occurring in Nutley.

The suspects would pose as water department employees asking to check the water pipes in the basements for a possible leak. As the homeowner would escort one suspect to the basement, the second suspect would quickly go through other areas in search of valuables.

Nutley Police charged both actors for similar incidents that occurred in their Township. The actors are also believed to have committed these type of burglaries in several other jurisdictions including New York City. Bloomfield Detectives are working together with the other departments to identify additional crimes that these suspects may be responsible for.

Police Director Samuel DeMaio praised the outstanding work of the Detectives in following every lead no matter how small which ultimately led to the arrest of the suspects. This is yet another incident where people from outside our township attempt to diminish our quality of life. We will work tirelessly to bring to justice anyone who comes to our township to commit criminal activity.
